Kathy discovered her passion for writing in her mid-50s when she wrote a poem for an invitation to her mother's birthday party. She started out writing poems for cards, refrigerator magnets and mugs. When her friends encouraged her to write a book, she drew from her many years of "hearing everyone's story" to publish her first book, Moments in Our Lives, a compilation of 65 vignettes of universal human experiences written for adults, in 2004. Next Kathy turned her attention to children's books with My Bent Tree (2008) based upon the loving support she received from her mom during a childhood battle with polio.
While searching for an illustrator, Kathy found out her Argentine tango instructor was an artist. Illustrator Cameron Bennett has subsequently illustrated all of Kathy's books, including The Inside Story (2009) and Just Sniffing Around (2010). For her book Purrsnikitty (2010), Kathy ran a contest to find the star of the book and to raise awareness for animal shelters. Next Kathy wrote The Winner Is (fall of 2010) about a large dog that enters a cat contest. Stover, a minor character in The Winner Is , now has his own book encouraging healthy family lifestyles. Stover encourages kids by showing that anyone even a pig can be healthy.
